The Bandhani Ladies: A photo essay

As Maria writes about in Traditional Textile Techniques, bandhani is largely divided into two parts: Tying and Dying. Traditionally, the females tie while the men deal with the dyeing. This image below shows how the women carefully wrap thread around calculated pieces of fabric to block it from the dye:

In the Khatri Family, the master bandhani artisan family with whom NorBlack NorWhite collaborated on their Rubina feature, this is also the case. The Rubina team was interested in meeting the Khatri ladies that have helped develop a name for themselves in India and beyond.
